Port St Lucie — “A rose by any other name.”
Port St Lucie, located in St. Lucie County is part of a four-county region called the Treasure Coast because of the numerous Spanish treasure ships that sunk off its shores. Other treasures exist in Port St Lucie that are more easily found.
If golf, boating, beautiful weather and beaches are the treasure you are looking for, then Port St Lucie is the place to look. Saint Lucie County lies between Indian River County to the north, Martin County to the South, and Okeechobee County to the West. St. Lucie County’s 588 square miles contain three municipalities consisting of Port St Lucie, White City, and Fort Pierce. St. Lucie County’s average annual temperature of 73.2 degrees offers superb year round climate for work and play.
Port St Lucie’s History.
Port St Lucie had its beginning in 1961 when General Development Corporation incorporated the City. With the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, it has long attracted fishermen and vacationers alike. These natural assets proved to be very attractive to prospective residents as well. It is the largest Treasure Coast city, encompasses seventy-seven square miles, of which only 37% is developed.
Port St Lucie has a Bright Future.
Port Saint Lucie’s future is brightened by projects like Saint Lucie West. It is the largest development on the Treasure Coast, comprised of 12 residential villages as well as commercial, and industrial areas in the 7-square-mile, billion dollar project. St Lucie West is a uniquely self-contained community set on 4,600 beautiful acres of lakes, golf courses, a major baseball stadium and beautiful homes. County Club Estates, Kings Isle, Lake Charles, The Reserve and Lake Forest are just a few of the small town neighborhoods found here. The city is home to New York Mets spring training and the St. Lucie Mets Florida State League team.
Port Saint Lucie’s size is approximately 112 square miles, with an additional 20 square miles within its Urban Service Boundary. Although it has many seasonal residents, the City’s average age of its population is about 40 years old.
Port St. Lucie offers a quality of life that few cities can match. It is located on the Southeast Coast of Florida with 14 miles of the St. Lucie River flowing through the central area of the city. On our eastern side we have the 6,000 acre Savannas preserve, the Indian River Lagoon estuary, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Port St. Lucie offers acres of natural habitat, the winter home of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) with a new golf school, and Club Med at Sandpiper Bay, one of two family-oriented Club Med’s in the country.
Educational facilities abound. Port St. Lucie has a controlled choice school system with magnet schools offering a variety of specialties. In the area of higher education it has a major branch of Indian River Community College, one of the top-rated schools in the state. Florida Atlantic University and Barry University have their campuses in Port Saint Lucie.
